Sara Worden Juvenile parrotfishes, Chlorurus sordidus and Scarus psittacus and their association with Sargassum mangarvense in Moorea, French Polynesia

The Association between two species of juvenile parrotfishes, Chlorurus sordidus and Scarus psittacus and an alga, Sargassum mangarvense was examined in Moorea French Polynesia. A number of treatments were constructed to test the relationships between size of an algal patch, the presence of algae and the juvenile fish. The relationship between the two species was also examined. Several existing plots of algae were cleared and transferred elsewhere. Over 6 days, the presence of juvenile parrotfishes increased on transplanted plots and decreased on cleared plots. The size of the patch does not determine number of individuals visiting each patch. A clear co-occurrence between C. sordidus and S. psittacus also exists.
